SANTA GERTRUDIS (Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera or
Santa Lletrudis called by natives), is a
cosy, little village in the
geographical center of Ibiza, belonging to the municipality of Santa Eulalia
and surrounded by beautiful landscapes of pine-clad green hills interspersed
with almond and orange orchards and flowering valleys, much favoured by horse
riders.
It is also one of the three traditional parishes along with San Rafael,
Ibiza and Sant Llorenc de Balafia NOT touching the ocean.
The beautiful, small, white-washed church, situated in the centre of the
village, dates back from 1797, and its current façade suffered various
modifications over time, its bell tower (1899), is the largest of all the
churches of Ibiza and its original wooden altarpiece, dating from the late
eighteenth century showing an image of Santa Gertrudis, is found in the
presbytery.
The church square not only welcomes regular churchgoers and wedding
couples, but also serves as a (artisan) market and meeting place.
The village is expanding rapidly and is home to many bars and a growing number
of (health-food) restaurants and shops, and you will also find the famous
Bar Costa and
Ibiza's auction house,
Casi Todo, here.
